Chapter 4: Anything For Her

I would do anything for her. She's the only friend I have left who isn't in the gang and who doesn't know or care if I am or am not a shifter. I can smell that she is, but she hasn't said anything to me yet so I don't let on that I know. Devlin hates her for whatever reasons he has. When we first met her he made it very clear that he didn't like her and his dislike rapidly became hatred when he found out that I had a crush on her.

We were 16 when our parents died. Devlin and I came home and within minutes a police officer was at the door to inform us. By law we could have a relative take care of us, but my parents had never put anyone down as godparents because either relatives wanted only me or only Devlin or neither of us. No one wanted two boys with polar opposite personalities.

That's always how it's been. Devlin and I look a lot alike, but not exactly the same, but our personalities have always been different. He's cocky, I'm calm and quiet. Devlin didn't say anything about our parents dying except that he didn't want to have to move and start new somewhere else. I agreed that starting over would be hard and we ran all of our options with the police and lawyers and informed the school about what had happened. Devlin never acted as though it affected him in the least. I handled everything. He stopped going to school for a while. I'd hear him come home in the middle of the night, but by the time I woke up in the morning he'd be long gone, but he always came back. I'd been working by then and needed whatever sleep I was able to get.

When our parents died Angeline was the only one who bothered to ask me if I wanted to talk about anything. All my teachers, and even some of Devlin's, asked if I wanted to talk about my parents. I'll never forget the day I really fell for Angeline. She was coming over to study and after school ended she met me at my car and sat on the ground waiting for me to get there. "I've been waiting for you." She said.

"Could have come to my class or text me." I teased.

She shrugged, "Could have, but the weather is nice and I'm okay with sitting outside for a while." She smiled at me and my heart melted. It always melted when she smiled at me.

I typed in the code to unlock the car, opened her door, and then walked to my side of the car while she got in. The ride to my house was spent in silence aside from music playing. Some group that had disbanded for whatever reason they had even though they had a huge fan base and their music was always popular. I pulled in the drive and as I turned off the car she finally spoke.

"You know," she paused, taking a deep breath as we turned to look at each other, "if there's ever anything you want to talk about, anything, you can always call me."

            "Even if it's 3 A.M. and I've had a bad dream?" I teased, joking.

"Oh, especially if it's 3 A.M. and you've had a bad dream!" She said as I laughed weakly. "I mean it, Du, if there's anything you want to talk about give me a call. If you don't want to talk on the phone I don't care what time of day or night it is, I'll come over."

We sat in utter silence as I gripped the steering wheel, staring down at my feet. My parents had been dead and buried for two weeks and people had not yet gotten the hint that I didn't want to talk about them. "Actually, there is something, Ange."

            "Yeah?"

"Can we talk about ANYTHING that is NOT my dead parents?"

            "Pick a topic."

With those three words I knew I'd fallen in love with her. I have been ever since. Seven years later and I'm still in love with her. I still haven't told her.
